GTR24h 12 Hours of Sebring 2019 – 1 car spot

The 12 hours of Sebring is one of the most legendary sports car races in the world. Held on a flat World War II B17 bomber airfield in Florida USA, you would be forgiven for thinking the racing is boring. But the layout features most of the original near 80-year-old concrete surface with only a few tarmac patches. The bumpiness of the racing surface produces one of the most mechanically abrasive race tracks in the world. What’s hard on cars also challenges the drivers and teams. Setup is a big compromise between softening the bumps with soft springs and low dampening shock absorbers vs. direct control and agility of the race cars.

Then there are the corners and long straights. Every lap features 3 straights with good overtaking opportunities. Faster classes normally don’t have to spend too long behind slower traffic. At the same time, this layout lends itself to drafting manoeuvres. It’s never easy to pull away from the competitor you just overtook on the last straight, making it likely for the car to attempt a re-pass in the next braking zone. Then there are the corners. Very few feature static radii and either tighten or open up through the corner. This makes it hard to determine the optimal apex and creates multiple racing lines through the corners. This fact creates perfect conditions for prolonged close racing.
